Zhuhai. This weekend the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia heads back to Zhuhai International Circuit for the first time since 2014. With two races from Asia’s premier one-make series, this jam-packed weekend of motorsport madness also features the first races of 2021 for the Porsche Sports Cup China as the fledgling series enters into its third year. As if that wasn’t enough Porsche passion to pack into a single stop, on 21 May we will also be celebrating the fourth anniversary of the founding of Porsche Club China – which has ballooned in size since its founding to become the fourth largest Porsche Club worldwide.
Return to Zhuhai International Circuit
The Porsche Carrera Cup Asia first visited Zhuhai International Circuit in 2006, where Darryl O’Young took a brace of victories to secure himself the season championship on the penultimate stop. Including that blistering debut, the Carrera Cup Asia has appeared at Zhuhai a total of 23 times over the years, with the series last appearance at the circuit being in 2014. First opened in 1996, Zhuhai was China’s very first permanent motor racing circuit – adding a sense of history to proceedings. At 4.319 km, Zhuhai is a mid-sized length for the season, however its average track width of 14m and abundance of hairpin turns and long straights make Zhuhai an ideal circuit for overtaking. With many fresh faces still to make their mark on the series, and many veterans eager to show the newcomers what they’ve got, Zhuhai promises to be a particularly thrilling stop.
Newcomers dominate after stunning season opener
With more new drivers on the track than ever before, the first two rounds of the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia 2021 season got off to a thrilling start as all drivers were eager to make their mark. BD Group’s Leo Ye currently sits at the top of the table with 43 points, having occupied the third spot on the podium in race 1 and winning race 2 outright. Meidong Racing’s Ling Kang is currently five points behind Leo on 38, having scored a victory in his first ever race for the series. That’s two new names, and two new teams currently occupying the top of the points table. The third spot on the overall points table goes to series regular Cui Yue representing Porsche Holding, with over 50 Carrera Cup Asia starts under his belt, Cui is sitting comfortably behind the second-place sitter on 34. The overall top 5 is rounded out by newcomer Yu Kuai driving for reigning champions Team StarChase and – formerly the youngest ever Pro driver in the series’ history – Daniel Lu Wenlong driving for Team Jebsen. Both Daniel and Yu Kuai are tied on 32 points.
The Pro-Am points table is also a refreshing mix of new blood and old talent, with fresh faces Min Heng and Zhou Bihuang – driving for TORO Racing and Meidong Racing respectively – separated by a single point at the top of the table. Absoute Racing’s Bian Ye sits in third, while series stalwart Li Chao – driving for Porsche Beijing Central & Goldenport – and reigning two-time Pro-Am champion Bao Jinlong round out the list.
The all-new Am category sees long-time friend-of-the-series Eric Kwong, driving for KiddyWorld Racing, sitting at the top of the table on 45 points, followed closely by Triple Ace Racing’s Henry Kwong on 42 and Team Shanghai Pudong & Waigaoqiao 69 Racing’s Jacky Wu on 40 points. Newcomer Li Jia with SilverRocket rounds out the table on 28 points.
