At just 17 years of age, Vietnamese–British driver Alex Sawer has delivered one of the most significant results in modern Vietnamese motorsport, securing the 2025 Formula 4 South East Asia Championship title after a dominant campaign across Malaysia and Thailand.
Born in 2008 to a Vietnamese mother and English father, Sawer began karting in Ho Chi Minh City before stepping onto the international ladder. What started as a childhood fascination with speed developed into a structured pursuit of Formula racing, with family support forming a central pillar of his progression.
His early grounding in karting provided the technical base required for single-seater racing. Like most drivers on the FIA pathway, Sawer transitioned from national competition into regional championships, quickly establishing himself as a credible prospect.
In 2023 he contested the F4 Indian Championship, finishing fifth overall with a race victory and consistent top-five finishes in his first full campaign abroad. The following season, despite entering only part of the F4 Chinese Championship, he claimed two wins, a pole position and a fastest lap, finishing seventh in the standings from limited starts.
Sawer then moved into higher tiers of competition. In 2024 he became the first Vietnamese driver to compete in the Formula Regional European Championship by Alpine, racing on major European circuits. While outright results were modest, the entry itself marked a milestone for Vietnamese representation in FIA single-seater racing. He also scored Việt Nam’s first point in the Formula Regional Middle East Championship, finishing 12th at Lusail.
That experience laid the foundation for his breakthrough season in Southeast Asia. Driving for Evans GP, Sawer combined raw pace with consistency to secure seven wins, four pole positions and five fastest laps across events at Sepang, Buriram and the Bangsaen street circuit. He wrapped up the title with three races remaining, sealing the championship in commanding fashion.
The achievement carries broader significance. Southeast Asia’s F4 platform is increasingly recognised as a cost-effective yet competitive step on the FIA ladder, attracting drivers from across Asia, Europe and Australia. Sawer’s title therefore represents not only personal progression but a visible benchmark for aspiring Vietnamese drivers.

He attributes much of his development to discipline and mental preparation. In single-seater racing, margins are measured in tenths and strategic execution is critical. Sawer emphasises visualisation, breathing control and complete focus once inside the cockpit, noting that concentration under pressure is often the decisive factor.
Beyond Formula machinery, 2025 also saw him step into GT competition in the Lamborghini Super Trofeo Asia, becoming the youngest driver in the field. Competing in the 620-horsepower Huracán Super Trofeo EVO II, he finished fourth at Inje Speedium, demonstrating adaptability between lightweight single-seaters and high-downforce GT machinery.
With the Southeast Asian crown secured, Sawer’s short-term objective is progression toward FIA Formula 3, while maintaining options in endurance and GT racing. The long-term ambition remains clear: sustained advancement through F3 and F2 with the ultimate goal of Formula 1.
For Vietnamese motorsport, his rise signals tangible momentum. A decade ago, representation at this level was rare. Today, through structured international programmes and cross-border competition, drivers such as Sawer are building a credible pathway onto the global stage.
His journey from local karting circuits to international podiums underlines what structured development, competitive exposure and disciplined preparation can deliver. Whether in single-seaters or GT racing, Alex Sawer has positioned himself as one of Southeast Asia’s most compelling young prospects and a standard-bearer for Việt Nam’s ambitions in international motorsport.
